How to Test and Improve Your Positioning at a Conference

Positioning and messaging can’t be developed in silos.

It’s not enough to do in-depth research and lean on your expertise.

Even the best marketers need third-party perspectives and feedback.

Conferences are one of the best places to test your positioning.

They deliver reactions and guidance from people who don’t know your story.

Conferences allow you to test new approaches in real-time to see what resonates.

Within hours, you’ll have enough feedback to improve and optimize your positioning.

It’s like a comedian experimenting with jokes. They keep the good ones and toss the rest.

At the recent SaaS North conference, a client, eLabs, and did some down and dirty A/B testing on its positioning.

We had many conversations but one of them had a major impact.

After we pitched our story, he asked a question that highlighted the value of the client’s subscription billing platform.

It was an “aha” moment. And, as important, did a lot to validate the conference sponsorship.

Better positioning (and marketing) happens in different ways.

Sometimes, it’s simply telling people your story and listening to how they react and the questions they ask.
